Holiday Lights on the Common

Norwell’s Holiday on the Common has been a long standing tradition between the Norwell VNA (NVNA) and the Norwell Men's Club (NorwellGiving).  Children arrive with Santa on Skip's vintage firetruck. Santa holds court with the little ones inside the Cushing Centre.  Hot Chocolate and Apple Cider warms the soul.  Then the grand finale is a few words from the Selectmen and Santa flipping the switch to light the Common.

The day’s schedule included:

2 p.m         Children’s Studio Chorus;
2:30 p.m    Santa arrived on an antique fire truck;
2:30 p.m    Music by St. Mary’s Contemporary Choir; and
4 p.m.        Lights on the Common.

In 2011, the Norwell Men's Club installed a half mile of lights on the Common

NorwellGiving cares about education AND our environment.  For the previous two decades, the lights had been installed and replaced each year.

The Norwell Men's Club had previously raised funds ($25,000) to run underground cables to the common and Vietnam Memorial but the incandescent bulbs maxed out the electrical supply.  300 ft of incandescent lighting was the maximum possible

In November 19th, 2011, 28 members of the Norwell Men's Club gathered to take down the previous 300 feet of incandescent lighting and replaced it with 3,000 feet of energy efficient, LED lighting.

This barn raising was supported by John Lunn, from Lunn Electrical with his 50 foot boom truck.  This saved the day and we actually broke the 30 foot boom that was used on the inside of the common (with John's larger truck on the outside of the common).

After a few sausages from Norwell's own Smoke House and 16 hours of hard effort, the lights were up and the dilemma of how to take 3,000 feet of lights down remains to this day.
